BenQ’s emaciated 8 megapixel DSC X800: just barely three-dimensional
Posted Jan 14th 2008 6:29PM by Evan BlassFiled under: Digital Cameras It may not be the biggest name in consumer electronics, but when it comes to stuffing megapixels into ridiculously-skinny packages, there aren’t many out there who do it better than BenQ. Case in point is the new eight megapixel DSC X800, which, at just 9.8 millimeters at its thinnest point (14mm at its fattest), is not only slimmer than the recently-announced DC X835, it even gives the company’s trimmest seven megapixel shooter, the 12.5-millimeter DC X725, a run for its money. Besides its pocketability, however, this model doesn’t offer much in the way of high-end features: 3x optical zoom, 3-inch LCD, digital image stabilization, VGA movie mode, and a rather non-standard microSD slot are par for the course here. New LG Prada in Silver
The LG Prada phone was a hit last year when it was released with over 700,000 handsets sold since its release in March 2007. So what major improvements have they come up with for 2008? Err - you can now get it in Silver, and …. well that is it really except a improvement to the QWERTY keyboard software. The LG-KE850 will launch later this year across Europe in 18 countries at the same time, including the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Sony trots out “portable” Bravia B4000 series LCD TVs
Posted Jan 14th 2008 11:47AM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Displays, HDTV While we doubt many will be lugging one of these around on their next business trip or outdoor adventure, Sony’s new line of Bravia B4000 LCD TVs does at least look to be portable enough to tote from room to room, a task made slightly easier by Sony’s thoughtful inclusion of a built-in handgrip. That somewhat distinct feature is apparently included on all of the models in the line (including 20, 23, and 26-inch varieties), each of which include virtual surround sound, Sony’s trademark “BRAVIA Engine,” dual HDMI ports, and integrated Freeview digital TV tuners. Ex-Midway guy suing Nintendo for Wiimote controls, has himself some prior art
Posted Jan 14th 2008 12:10AM by Paul MillerFiled under: Gaming, Peripherals Normally when we see somebody filing a lawsuit with interface-related patents in question, we’re talking about some vague thing filed a couple months after that product went into production and with little relation to the real-life technology under fire. No such luck for Nintendo this time around: Pat Connelly, an ex-Midway employee, has a YouTube video up showing a co-conspirator demonstrating something astoundingly similar to a Wiimote / Nunchuck… eight years ago. His demo shows his hacked-together controllers providing a surprisingly-responsive interface for a bit of Ready 2 Rumble Boxing on the Dreamcast. Penryn beginning to pop up in Lenovo’s X61 ThinkPads

Penryn beginning to pop up in Lenovo’s X61 ThinkPads
Posted Jan 14th 2008 11:26AM by Paul MillerFiled under: LaptopsWhile we’re short on formal announcements, various retailers are displaying Lenovo ThinkPad X61 wares with Intel’s latest chips inside. A Penryn T8100-powered X61 is on MacMall with 1GB of RAM and a 120GB HDD for $1,550, while a T8300 version goes for $1,610. Specs are otherwise the same as existing ThinkPads, and no tablet version is offered. It’s starting to feel like laptop manufacturers are stringing us along here, instead of offering next-gen laptops to match Intel’s next-gen chips, but it’s still early in the game, and maybe we’re just paranoid. Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh available to the public
Posted Jan 14th 2008 11:05AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Desktops, Laptops Just as Microsoft did last month with Vista SP1 release candidate, the latest build (dubbed SP1 RC Refresh) has been loosed from its privately held shackles and is now available for the public to descend upon. According to ZDNet, Redmond decided to make this iteration publicly available “in the interest of gaining additional tester feedback.” Of note, you will likely be forced to install “two or three updates” before SP1 RC Refresh can be installed, but we know you’re quite unconcerned with all the fine print. The last Sky Commuter concept craft hits eBay
Posted Jan 14th 2008 10:23AM by Paul MillerFiled under: Transportation Oh, what a tease! This here Sky Commuter prototype is the last remaining example of what could have been: after the company failed in the late 80’s and the plant was shut down, all other prototypes of this personal commuter craft were destroyed. The vehicle is registered with the FAA as a “VTOL” (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft, but the prototype can only hover to about 10 feet before losing stability. It’s going for $62,600, a virtual bargain, but you’d better move fast — the auction ends in an hour. (Read the full post about ‘The last Sky Commuter concept craft hits eBay’…)

GlobalPandora - Pandora hacked to give world access again?

GlobalPandora - Pandora hacked to give world access again?
GlobalPandora. Er…it looks as though some enterprising folk have opened the wonderful Pandora up to the world again. This comes hot on the heels of the announcement that the UK is to lose access to Pandora this week due to…gasp, guess what…a breakdown of talks with the ever stupid record industry. Of course I can’t test it until the cut-off comes tomorrow, but if it works as seems…well fabulous. the box is open Tags: tests, mobiles, speaker, design (Read the full post about ‘GlobalPandora - Pandora hacked to give world access again?’…)
