Microsoft rolls out Zune 2.3 software update with fixes aplenty
Posted Jan 22nd 2008 4:26PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Portable Audio, Portable Video Not to be confused with the Zune 2.3 firmware update, Microsoft is today pushing out the Zune 2.3 software update, which brings with it a whole slew of fixes but no real new features. If the rundown of those fixes given by the ever-helpful Cesar of the Zune Insider blog are any indication, however, it seems that there are few areas of that software that aren’t touched by the update. Among the problems getting ironed out are various Marketplace issues, as well as some some nagging podcast problems (like not being able to subscribe to anything larger than 10MB), setup issues, and UI mishaps, not to mention a whole mess of sync issues that have supposedly now been sorted, to name a few things. Voice-controlled Dalek

Voice-controlled Dalek
We’ve seen remote controlled Daleks in the past - but here’s a new novelty. Voice-controlled Daleks FTW! The Voice Controlled Dalek is a new generation of galactic evil. Standing a mighty foot and a half high, he’s able to track moving objects, and as well as you being able to direct him by radio control, he responds to over 30 voice commands. Complete with sound, movement and heat sensors, he’s festooned with sound and light effects, and his memory banks store over 50 Dalek phrases (helpfully translated into gargled English). His ‘Eye’ and ‘Exterminator’ arm light up, and his head can rotate through 270 degrees - which steals the thunder from owls somewhat. (Read the full post about ‘Voice-controlled Dalek’…)

Fujitsu intros super slim F705i: A waterproof, 3G capable handset
Fujitsu has just intro’d the F705i, a new handset that is only 13.7mm thin, which makes it the “slimmest waterproof phone ever made.” The F705i is fully waterproof and can handle anything from that heavy downpour you may get caught in to being submerged in water. The F705i is capable of being submerged in up to one meter of water for a full 30 minutes. As for voice quality, the handset features the Super Clear Voice and Super Clear Mike which work automatically to adjust the volume of a caller depending on noise levels in the room. The F705i also features a 1.3-megapixel camera, text-zooming and offers up to 170 minutes of talk time. Apple adds pink iPod nano to lineup

Apple adds pink iPod nano to lineup
Apple’s famous line of iPods has received yet another addition - and this time, it is the iPod nano family to gain from the latest of Cupertino’s think tanks. No, it isn’t a major hardware revision or anything of that sort but instead will feature a brand new color. You can put all those party hats away for now I guess with this rather deflated announcement from Apple. Still, I am sure that there is a certain segment of the population that would love pink to adorn just about any gadget and gizmo that is released today, which means the pink iPod nano will probably do pretty well in terms of sales. How much does a color change cost? Nothing, apparently, as the pink 8GB iPod nano will still retail for $199. (Read the full post about ‘Apple adds pink iPod nano to lineup’…)

X-rays get boost from “dark field” technology

X-rays get boost from “dark field” technology
Posted Jan 22nd 2008 2:05PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Misc. Gadgets While it may not give you quite the graphic glimpse as some of the recent CT scanners we’ve seen, a group of researchers at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark think their new and improved x-ray system still won’t have any trouble catching on, and the results are certainly hard to argue with. The key to those sharper pics, it seems, is so-called “dark field microscopy,” a technique that, as NewScientist points out, is normally used by biologists. As you might expect, however, there’s some upsides and downsides to this particular technique. On the plus side, all that’s needed is a simple set of four silicon filters in addition to some standard x-ray equipment. (Read the full post about ‘X-rays get boost from “dark field” technology’…)

CES 2008 Coverage by Virtual Hideout

CES 2008 Coverage by Virtual Hideout
Diceman over at Virtual Hideout sent the Geeks their link of additional coverage of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES). As you know, if you can think of any technical gizmo or gadget, chances are that it’s already there. This year’s event didn’t quite have the amount of computer components as last year, but there was still plenty and High Definition was all the rave. Of course, there were still endless rows of iPod and music player stations. As a matter of fact, there were more of those than High Definition Televisions. I’m not sure we need more docking stations, but HD TVs advancements are always a good thing. The more new products that come out, the quicker prices drop on the current products. Check out their coverage here. Tags: mobile devices, tech, hdtv, Ogg Vorbis (Read the full post about ‘CES 2008 Coverage by Virtual Hideout’…)

4 CES unsung heros: gadgets you can get now

4 CES unsung heros: gadgets you can get now
I have the patience of a four year old.  I don’t want to know about things available in six months, I want it now.  OK, really I wanted it five minutes ago, but you get my drift.  CES is all about the future and that is fine, but what about things you can take away now?  Here is my list of cool things I took away: SimulScribe - I’ve been waffling back and forth on giving this a shot.  This service takes over your voicemail from your carrier and then emails/sms you the transcribed version along with a wav file.  That sounds scary at first, but it is simple and completely reversible, not unlike a vasectomy.  The result is you don’t need to stand there listening to voicemail (which is a complete waste of time).  Instead of playing the message and listening to callers stumble over their ideas, you cut right to the chase and speed-read their message.  Awesome.  Plans start at $9.99, and if you try it, you’ll find you’d offer to pay a lot more for such a game-changing solution.  Simply awesome. Persida LapSac: Comfy laptop bag and carry-all

Persida LapSac: Comfy laptop bag and carry-all
You’re a laptop lugger - your computer is nearly an extra appendage, so you place a price on functionality, fashion, and comfort. Nanda Home’s redesigned Persida LapSac fits laptops of differing sizes (12.78″x9.1″x1.08″). The LapSac comes in creamy white canvas with a pink lace pattern so its fashionable, and at the same time it’s bigger, better, and more useful with it’s four pockets than typical snug-fitting sleeves and boxy, bulky bags. My favorite part of the design is the ability of the bag to conform to the shape of my body, so even if I spend more than an hour waiting in line (egads TSA!), I find that I don’t get the pain in my neck, back, and side.
