MovieBeam hardware gets hacked for shell access
Posted Jan 25th 2008 8:04PM by Nilay PatelFiled under: Home EntertainmentJudging from the fairly consistent stream of comments on our “MovieBeam is dead” post, there are quite a few of you out there looking to hack your now-defunct MovieBeam hardware — which strikes us as a somewhat quixotic effort, but then again, so was the entire MovieBeam enterprise. Anyway, it looks like some solid progress is starting to be made, with a dev wiki up and running, and instructions for getting into the hard drive, netbooting, gaining shell access, and even running custom code posted up. Rock Band instruments pursuing solo careers February 12th
Posted Jan 25th 2008 11:59AM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: Gaming In a bit of shocking news today, two members of the Rock Band instruments set have declared that come February 12th, they’re going solo. Citing “creative differences,” and the original bundled guitar’s inability to “clean up its act,” the two solo pieces will be on their own and available for $79.99 and $59.99, respectively. This should come as good tidings for players who’ve had trouble getting a bass into the mix (PlayStation 3 gamers), or those who’ve wanted to rock the drum vs. drum match-ups. LawnBott LB3500 offers Bluetooth control, stylin’ rims
Posted Jan 25th 2008 10:59AM by Evan BlassFiled under: Household, Robots iRobot may own the market for autonomous indoor cleaning devices, but when it comes to taming that wild jungle you call a backyard, the new king of the hill may well be the LawnBott LB3500. This fourth-generation LawnBott from Kyodo America improves upon its predecessors in nearly every category: even though it weighs ten pounds less than the entry-level LB2000, it offers up a greater coverage area, increased cutting width, greatly improved incline climbing capability, longer runtime, and best of all, a Bluetooth radio for programming or direct control by cellphone. Don’t hold your breath for OLED key alternative: United Keys guy has a history
Posted Jan 25th 2008 10:21AM by Paul MillerFiled under: Laptops, Peripherals It all looks innocent and feasible on the surface, but behind the scenes we have no idea how realistic this gaming keyboard from United Keys is ever going to get. Sure, word of a manufacturing deal with FoxConn is good news, but it turns out a key employee has a bit of a history with false product launches. The man is Valdi Ivancic, of Medison fame — that $150 laptop that never was. Valdi spent seven months with United Keys in 2005, and then went on to purportedly found his own company named “Swedish Keys.” What’s unclear is the relationship between the two companies, but we’re not going to get our hopes up for much product from either until it shows up on store shelves. Apple iPhone Review - PC Pro

Apple iPhone Review - PC Pro
PC Pro reviews the Apple iPhone and writes, “Elsewhere, the 2-megapixel camera is another annoyance. Image quality is good, but there’s no way to send a multimedia message: you’re forced to resort to email. There’s also no way to record video irking given the 8GB of storage. And, unlike standard iPods, you can’t drag individual songs or albums from your iTunes library to the iPhone only playlists. It’s particularly annoying when first loading songs, but remains irritating each time you want to add more, especially if you’re only adding one song. Then there’s the headphone socket, which is so deeply recessed there’s already a market for bulky headphone adapters if your headphones have the connector at right-angles to the cable, they almost certainly won’t fit.” Read more about the Apple iPhone. HDD Stage Rack grows an eSATA port
Posted Jan 25th 2008 8:38AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Storage You already loved it in its USB 2.0 incarnation. Now check the HDD Stage Rack with an additional eSATA interface. Who couldn’t use an extra 315MB/s transfer rate for their 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch disks? Yours now for $57.15 before those excessive shipping costs are factored in.[Thanks, Tyson W.]Tags: video game, dap, ipod, mobiles (Read the full post about ‘HDD Stage Rack grows an eSATA port’…)

700MHz “C” block receives $1.24 billion opening bid — $3.36 billion to go for open-access
Posted Jan 25th 2008 5:44AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Wireless According to Reuters, the 700MHz “C” Block has received an opening bid of $1.24 billion. Unfortunately, a minimum bid of $4.6 billion is required to trigger the open-access rule. The rule which requires the victor to open that long-propagating and basement-penetrating spectrum to any and all mobile devices and software applications. It’s so important that Google, Verizon, and others have been battling over it even before the FCC auction began. No worries, the auction has several weeks to go. BlackBerry Pearl 8130 Review - PC Mag

BlackBerry Pearl 8130 Review - PC Mag
PC Mag reviews the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 and writes, “Research in Motion’s 2-megapixel camera sensor, first seen on the Curve, finds its way into the new Pearl 8130. It’s quite good here, too, taking sharp, detailed photos, even in low-light situations. Compared with a standalone camera, the images were a little flat on color and soft on contrast, but they’re surprisingly good. The LED flash helped brighten things a bit, but it also gave an orange tint to some photos. The Pearl records 240-by-176 videos—a new development for RIM—although recorded files showed too much motion blur. The trim handset delivered excellent battery life for an EV-DO device, lasting 5 hours 24 minutes on a talk-time rundown test.” Read more about the BlackBerry Pearl 8130.
