Garmin Nuvifone takes fight to Nokia
Not content with sitting back and watching the likes of Nokia, Samsung and co march on their turf with their new GPS phones, Garmin have hit back with this, the glorious new Garmin nüvifone, a GPS phone designed from the ground up to focus on navigation first and mobility second. Don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s a second rate mobile phone, though. With HSDPA, a camera that provides automatic geo-tagging, mp3 player, mobile Web browser and video camera, it provides all the features of your average mobile phone, and then chucks in some superb GPS features and a giant 3.5″ touchscreen to boot! N Range helps take out your rage

Ever felt so much rage at home or the office that you just wanted to shoot something or someone? Well now you can take out that aggression on a proper target with the N Range indoor target range. Yeah, that’s right, inside that beautiful armoire shown here is a target. Now you don’t have to go to the shooting range to “get your gun off”, but just open it up and shoot away. Blam! Blam! Blam! In case you are wondering, the target is steel-backed so the bullets will not go through the armoire and through the wall. So it’s an armored armoire. Of course, there is the matter of the deafening noise. Do you really want neighbors or co-workers reporting gunshots fired? (Read the full post about ‘N Range helps take out your rage’…)

Eizo lets loose 30-inch CG301W monitor with hardware calibration
Posted Feb 4th 2008 3:12PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Displays Eizo first let out word about this one last fall, but it looks like the company’s just now gotten around to formally introducing its latest 30-inch display, with the CG301W making its debut at the big PMA show in Las Vegas. Among other things, this one boasts hardware calibration for those not willing to take any chances, and an impressive 97% reproduction of the Adobe RGB color space. Other specs are similarly high-end, including a 2560 x 1600 resolution, dual DVI-D inputs for hooking up two computers (with a picture-in-picture function to boot), and Eizo’s Application Specific Integrated Circuit (or ASIC), which promises to work all sorts of magic to deliver the best image possible. Yahoo moves to Real, still offering unlimited music
Yahoo has announced that they will be replacing their Yahoo Unlimited Music service with Real Networks Rhapsody for their on-demand music service. All current Yahoo subscribers will be transitioned over to a Rhapsody account within a few months. Once moved over the users will be able to enjoy their music service on more devices that were not available as Yahoo customers to include the Squeezebox and also TiVo set top boxes. In addition to switching over to Real, Yahoo also announced they have acquired FoxyTunes. According to Yahoo, this will allow them to offer a “more open” music playback experience. FoxyTunes currently offers a browser plugin that has controls for offline and web-based media players. (Read the full post about ‘Yahoo moves to Real, still offering unlimited music’…)

Autobot USB flash drive

Autobot USB flash drive

The Transformers Movie was one of last year’s biggest summer hits, raking in the dough while igniting the second childhood phase of many an adult who would have probably picked up their fair bit of action figures (this being made possible after holding down a job and getting regular income without depending on parents for a financial handout). The fever is still on, it seems, with this USB flash drive that comes in the form on an Autobot insignia while concealing a USB connection. It hooks up to your computer via USB 2.0, achieving a theoretical maximum data transfer speed of 480Mbps. Unfortunately, it avails itself with only 1GB of memory, so those who are more comfortable with 2GB or even 4GB will have to look elsewhere. (Read the full post about ‘Autobot USB flash drive’…)

E-TEN’s Glofiish M810 and V900 with secret touch-based WinMo interface
Posted Feb 4th 2008 7:58AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: cellphones, GPS, Portable VideoAfter teasing us with a lustful peep from their V900’s marketing collateral, E-TEN had the good grace to make their newest Glofiish official. Their first handset to offer mobile TV does so without hesitation — DVB-H, DVB-T, T-DMB, and DAB broadcast media are all supported on that generous VGA display. These consumer oriented Windows Mobile phones pack an unspecified GSM radio, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS underneath a new, E-TEN developed touch-based user interface. Presumably, E-TEN has a TouchFLO-like layer to hide the consumer-unfriendly ugliness of Microsoft’s increasingly dated and finger-meat hating mobile OS. Launching February 11th in Barcelona, the new 10.9-mm thin phone features a metal frame and tempered glass touch interface. LG primarily touts the phone’s “advanced touch technology” (incorporating VibeTouch haptic feedback like their Voyager, we presume), 3 megapixel camera, and mp3 player. Available worldwide in March in Stardust Dark Gray or Sunset Red. (Read the full post about ‘LG’s slinky KF510 slider is ready to rumble’…)

Intel launching Tukwila: world’s first 2 billion transistor chip
Posted Feb 4th 2008 5:47AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Misc. gadgets We first head of Intel’s quad-core Tukwila back in 2006. Now, it’s launching at the International Solid State Circuits Conference. Expected to arrive in the second half of the year, the 2GHz Itanium processor packs in more than 2 billion transistors. Unfortunately, it’s headed straight to the raised-floor room, not your consumer-class desktop. The good news for IT types is that the proc doubles the performance of Intel’s enterprise-class, 9100-series Montvale processors with just a 25% increase in power consumption. So, we looking at 4 billion transistors by 2010 Mr. Moore? Probably, Tukwila is still using 65-nm processes as opposed to Intel’s new 45-nm technology. The Maxablaster-Portable Star Light, be Careful Where you Point that Thing
For the latest info on the coolest gadgets, emerging technology and wired madness, subscribe to our full news feed or have it delivered to your inbox. Always free. Always unique. Thanks for visiting! This is without a doubt the brightest flashlight I have ever seen. It is dangerously bright, using a pack of 54 batteries and a mercury arc bulb to shoot a beam of light up to four miles high. Seriously folks, this is something that you would have to use responsibly. If you can light up a cloud four miles high, it is certainly enough to cause problems for air traffic, not to mention the fact that it can actually burn skin. Automotive X-Prize challenge ignored by major carmakers

Automotive X-Prize challenge ignored by major carmakers
Posted Feb 4th 2008 3:31AM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: Transportation Sure, you’d think that major automakers would want to get in on the Automotive X-Prize challenge, a contest seeking to help create the first 100 MPG car, if only just to show off their engineering prowess and interest in future technologies. Of course, you’d be wrong. Not a single, big commercial carmaker has thrown its hat in the ring, and X-Prize organizer Donald Foley has a theory: fear of losing the game to a small start-up. Obviously, all the major players have an excuse when it comes to their lack of participation; Ford is busy with its EcoBoost program, GM is working with Carnegie Mellon University on similar technology.
