TerreStar nabs $300 million in funding, aims for satellite launch by end of year
Posted Feb 8th 2008 5:18PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Cellphones TerreStar certainly hasn’t been flooding us with news over the years, but it looks like the company’s been keeping itself busy nonetheless, and its now scored an impressive $300 million in funding for its efforts. That money, coming from EchoStar and Harbinger Capital Partners, will largely be used to fund the company through the launch of its TerreStar-1 “hybrid mobile satellite” (pictured above in a circa 2005 mockup), which promises to power cellphones that’ll be able to use traditional terrestrial networks and fall back on satellite when there’s no other signal. Extreme Contact Lens Cleaner
There are two ways to clean contact lenses: the traditional one, and the high-tech one. Which one would you chose? This contact lens cleaner is very quick doing its task, it only takes 2 minutes to clean a pair of lenses, and that is where the name - Two-Minute Ultrasonic - comes from. You can either use purified water, or a saline solution, as the liquid to clean the lenses. After that, all the magic is done thanks to the high-tech stuff included on the cleaner, like a “piezoelectric transducer “ and “ inaudible high frequency sound waves”. Priced at $40. Dell confusingly “committed” to AMD
Posted Feb 8th 2008 3:15PM by Paul MillerFiled under: Desktops, Laptops In a memo sent out today by Dell, the company has reassured us that even though AMD is disappearing rapidly from its online store, the company remains “committed” to AMD, and is just “in the process of redistributing its product mix” — whatever that means. But despite those euphemisms, consumers can only buy most Dell AMD systems through a retail store or over the phone. Dell pointed out that it has kept its Energy Star 4.0 Inspiron 531 consumer desktop available online, but most other AMD machines are now just for business customers or those strange creatures that use “phones” and “buildings” to buy things. The case of Alienware’s disappearing m15x edge lighting
Posted Feb 8th 2008 7:53AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Gaming, Laptops The forum jockeys riding NotebookReview have whipped themselves into a rightful tizzy over their new Area-51 m15x laptops. It seems that the first round of recipients received their swank gaming machines with that programmable edge lighting intact. The rest lost it completely without even a hint from Alienware and certainly without the consent from its paying customers. The situation then turned ugly when at least some owners complained only to be told by Alienware’s support that the power button was the 6th promised light zone, not the LCD edge. Now the good news. The light tubes are in there, but for whatever reason, a software patch must be applied to activate them. (Read the full post about ‘The case of Alienware’s disappearing m15x edge lighting’…)

The 2400 square-foot private arcade
Posted Feb 8th 2008 7:32AM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: Gaming Sometimes, there’s no way to appreciate something someone else has without thoughts of pure envy. Such is the case when viewing Peter Hirschberg’s elborate, sprawling recreation of the greatest arcade that never was, dubbed Luna City. Imagine 2400 square-feet filled with nearly every classic coin-op game you can imagine — including stunners like Star Wars, Tempest, Tron, Zaxxon, Missile Command, and Galaga — available for your use, free of charge, 24 hours a day. The massive collection also holds gems like the original Pong arcade machine and the Space Wars copycat Space War (based on one of the earliest known computer games), making the assemblage of coin-ops not just incredibly fun, but also a substantial act of historic preservation.
