Yahoo! officially spurns Microsoft’s advances
Posted Feb 11th 2008 10:25AM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: Misc. gadgets Just in case you misunderstood the news from Yahoo!, they don’t want Microsoft’s money, help, time, or friendship. Officially. In a somewhat related story, Jerry Yang says he’s also not interested in a week-long round of brunching with Steve Ballmer. No word yet on whether he’s game for a dinner date and coffee with Sergey Brin.Tags: design, Hi-fi, gadgetry, equipment (Read the full post about ‘Yahoo! officially spurns Microsoft’s advances’…)

LiMo Foundation plans SDK for mid 2008
Posted Feb 11th 2008 12:29PM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: cellphones With all the hubbub over Android at Mobile World Congress this year (and in the world, in general), it only makes sense that other Linux-based contenders would step into the light. The LiMo Foundation — a consortium of some pretty major players — has announced plans for an official SDK in the second half of the year which will cover native, Java, and WebKit development. The software, dubbed the R1 LiMo Platform, will pull together existing APIs and development tools into a more cohesive whole, with ACCESS taking the lead on the native side, Aplix heading up Java development, and Motorola fleshing out the WebKit tools. Yahoo!  to revive merger talks with AOL
The Times of London are reporting that Yahoo! is seeking to resume merger talks with AOL as a way of defending itself from Microsoft’s takeover bid. Previous talks broke off after disagreements about price, but the unwelcome takeover bid by Microsoft has spurred hopes of renewed negotiations. Yahoo says they are rejected Microsoft’s offer because they feel it undervalues the company and won’t consider it unless they are offered at least $12 billion more. A source close to Yahoo!’s thinking told The Times: “All they [Microsoft] are trying to do is pick off the company on the cheap. They’re trying to steal it. And the board is not going to let that happen. (Read the full post about ‘Yahoo!  to revive merger talks with AOL’…)

Andriod rears its awesome head
Yes, Google’s Android phones are now attacking in Barcelona.  The first out of the chute is this one from Texas Instruments for an unnamed vendor.  Word is this thing is blazing fast to respond, has nice integration with Gmail, Google Maps, Google searches.  To be sure, this is an early build lacking the update to the SDK that Google is adding, but it holds much hope for the future. These basic phones were not online and the programs were less than full featured, but that is what you expect in an early prototype.  Word is we’ll see the first results in the 2nd half of the year.  Given high speed processors and a dedicated design team, Google may really have something here.  Stay tuned. Nokia’s hot over/under slider
Meet the N96, a 16GB over/under slider that is the new tough guy on the block.  Shown today at MWC, the Nokia beauty is impressive.  The phone slides down revealing a number pad as normal, but also slides up revealing entertainment controls.  Fun.  It packs just about everything you could want in a phone. Featuring a sexy 2.8” display, the N96 not only has 16GB internal memory but adds a SD slot for even more storage.  And storage you will want thanks to its DVBh live mobile TV and 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss lens.  It also sports A-GPS and Nokia’s mapping software.  Rounding out the list are 3D Speakers and WiFi.  Hot. The Picture Frame Bug

The Picture Frame Bug

This is a sneaky way to bug a room, a picture frame with a built in microphone that you can phone up and listen to what’s going on. This larger sized picture frame (which you can add your own picture to) may be hung on a wall in a room of your choice. You can then dial the number of the GSM bug built into the rear of the frame - the call will connect silently after two rings and you will be able to hear whats going on in the room…from anywhere in the world! The picture frame costs $129.99 (~$250) and comes with a SIM card but it doesn’t say if there are any ongoing subscription costs. (Read the full post about ‘The Picture Frame Bug’…)

Sony Ericsson intro’s Z770 clamshell

The Z770 takes advantage of HSDPA speeds and can also be used (via USB cable) as a modem when attached to your laptop. As for the easy web and email the Z770 has an “email set-up wizard” with support for Exchange ActiveSync, along with “intuitive navigation features for fast web browsing.” The web browsing on the Z770 is via the Access NetFront browser with Google Maps for mobile pre-installed and built-in support for RSS feeds.
