Rockwell Collins to outfit Marines with head-mounted ParaNav units
Posted Feb 15th 2008 1:41PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: GPS, WearablesIt looks like the US Marines will soon be adding yet another bit of gear to their already well-equipped high-tech arsenal, with Rockwell Collins announcing that it’s set to provide ‘em with 3,000 of its head-mounted ParaNav GPS units, which will be used to give parachutists a bit of guidance assistance. As you can see at the right, the system makes use of a heads-up display for maximum convenience and added sci-fi effect, which is apparently full-color and able to attach directly to parachutist’s goggle’s or helmet shield. Wal-Mart to ditch HD DVD

Wal-Mart to ditch HD DVD
Let’s hope the widespread rumors about Toshiba’s plan to kill HD DVD are true. If not, it might as well prepare for its hara-kiri as soon as possible. It’s because the country’s largest retailer Wal-Mart has announced its allegiance to Blu-ray. Poor Toshiba, only DreamWorks remains as a major studio loyal to hd dvd. Recently, Best Buy and online video renters Netflix also betrayed the weakened DVD format. In the next 30 days, the Wal-Mart’s online business and its 4,000 brick-and-mortar Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores will exclusively carry Blu-ray players and movies. Moreover, the retail giant will retain the standard definition DVD players and movies in its inventory. (Read the full post about ‘Wal-Mart to ditch HD DVD’…)

Hey Everex, it’s the 15th: CloudBooks please?
Posted Feb 15th 2008 8:27AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: LaptopsOk Everex, it’s been the 15th of February for more than 8 hours in the US. Still, your CloudBook is nowhere to be found on Wal-mart or ZaReason. As intriguing as this “deactivated” CloudBook page is over at NewEgg, it’s hardly a replacement for the thrill of being the first kid on the block to unbox a $399, 7-inch laptop with 30GB disk now is it? [Thanks, Dirkus and Travis M.]Read — Wal-mart (nope)Read — ZaReason (zilch)Read — NewEgg (you wish)Tags: consumer technology, Ogg Vorbis, hdtv, ipod (Read the full post about ‘Hey Everex, it’s the 15th: CloudBooks please?’…)

Cork Coat iPhone case
As I may have mentioned in previous posts, my iphone is completely spoiled. It has to have the latest in accessories, from earbuds to car chargers to the stylish new cases. It changes covers more often than Barbie changes clothes. Its latest acquistion is this cork protective cover from Griffin. Since it’s made by Griffin Technology, it’s functional as well as good-looking, featuring a protective polycarbonate inner shell, with easy access to multi-touch display, ports and controls, and a static peel screen protector . Note on the installation: just put your iPhone in the top casing then snap the back into place. To open the case, insert a coin into the notch in the bottom corner and gently twist. Rumor: Palm Centro to launch with Verizon
Some new information has turned up that points to both AT&T and Verizon launching the Palm Centro. It is commonly know that they exclusivity deal with Sprint is ending soon and makes perfect sense that we can expect to see the popular handset showing up with other carriers, except this was previously rumored to be going to AT&T and T-Mobile. Now with the AT&T Centro all but officially confirmed for Tuesday February 19, we can also expect a Verizon branded model as well. Among the company’s new products, Coster said, will be a version of the Centro with phone service from AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. An exclusive deal with Sprint Nextel Corp. Coby announces new touch screen PMP
Usually, people assume that all touch screen PMP’s are knock offs the iPod Touch, they are usually right, however, this new Coby PMP is not really like the ipod Touch at all. In fact, it is more like Samsung’s P2. To begin with the Coby MP-835, it measures out at 52 x 97 x 10mm, which is pretty thin and compact. It features a main button located on the top left corner, other than typical device buttons being in the center of the bottom. It sports a nice 3-inch screen with a resolution of 480 x 272. Additionally, it comes with USB connectivity and SD memory expansion. It supports a variety of formats including MP3, WMA, OGG, WMV, JPG, BMP, GIF and TXT. Intelligent cardiac assist fabric beats your heart for you
Posted Feb 15th 2008 4:20AM by Nilay PatelFiled under: Misc. gadgetsCrazy artificial hearts and even heart-tissue based robots are nothing new — to say nothing of the Pimp My Heart bass-booster — but actually squeezing your existing heart to extend its life is definitely a novel idea. The concept, from a team at Leeds University, is based around an intelligent, motorized webbing that wraps around your heart. When sensors indicate that your pump needs a jump, the webbing contracts, squeezing blood through your body.
