Concept Alienware phone mock-ups, looks like a PC

Concept Alienware phone mock-ups, looks like a PC
It was already known that Dell really wanted to enter the phone arena because many giant companies have already begun to create their own phones. Companies such as Apple, Hewlett Packard and Asus, have already successfully entered the phone arena and if Dell looks to make their own mark in the phone industry they will hopefully try to do it with Alienware and Google’s Android. Upon first looking at these mock-up of the phone, to me, I think it looks pretty cool and unique and I wouldn’t mind purchasing one of these phones. However, when you take a closer look, there seem to be a lot of ridges running down the side of the phone, so that might be a bit annoying. Concept Alienware Android phone makes our brain, hands hurt

Concept Alienware Android phone makes our brain, hands hurt
Posted Feb 16th 2008 3:22PM by Chris ZieglerFiled under: cellphones, Handhelds There’s a reason phones don’t remotely resemble PC cases, and we think this mockup does a fabulous job demonstrating why that is. Okay, look, we’re totally cool with Dell and Alienware producing an Alienware-branded handset — especially if it runs Android, a platform Dell has been rumored to be very, very interested in — we just really don’t want this (or anything like this) to be it. The morphing keypad and user interface look awesome, but we have a very simple rule when we purchase a new phone: under no circumstances should the slider have physically painful ridges digging into your hands during use. Hydrogen fuel cell-powered MOTOSLVR L7 prototype gets pictured
Posted Feb 16th 2008 1:46PM by Darren MurphFiled under: cellphones Right around a month ago, we heard that Angstrom Power had managed to stuff some of its sophisticated hydrogen fuel cells into a MOTOSLVR L7. That prototype, friends, is what you see about. Unfortunately, we’re no closer to realizing when this stuff will actually escape the proverbial beta stage, and for whatever it’s worth, we’re also no closer to feeling absolutely safe with one of these next to our melon (though existing alternatives don’t have the greatest track record either).Tags: amps, cameras, gps, gadgets (Read the full post about ‘Hydrogen fuel cell-powered MOTOSLVR L7 prototype gets pictured’…)

When is Mobile not Mobile?

Written by admin on Saturday, February 16th, 2008 in Gadgets.

When is Mobile not Mobile?
In the UK experiments are due to start where mobile (cell) phone calls made in the home will be routed through the users broadband connection rather than through the existing phone network, because of the increasing volume and subsequent strain on the traditional networks. The technology is similar to that used in Wi-Fi and connectivity is based on ‘Femtocells’ which are small pockets of wireless connectivity—just think wireless router. Putting the increased volume into perspective, the growth of video downloads means that a network that would normally handle 500 voice conversations at the same time, would only handle 15 simultaneous downloads. Activision cranks up Wii Guitar Hero III disc replacement program

Activision cranks up Wii Guitar Hero III disc replacement program
Posted Feb 16th 2008 11:43AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Gaming Select owners of Guitar Hero III for Wii have been moshing uncontrollably as best they can in mono for months on end, but it seems as if Activision has finally got its interconnects sorted and will start issuing replacement discs. According to direct end-user reports and the (admittedly blurry) shots in the gallery below, the firm is now dishing out pre-paid envelopes in which customers have to ship back their faulty GH III disc and wait “3 to 4 weeks” before getting a new, stereo-enabled one free of charge. Live sans your favorite game for a month, or keep rockin’ in the monaural world? Tough call, indeed.[Thanks, Sam K.] Gallery: Activision cranks up Wii Guitar Hero (Read the full post about ‘Activision cranks up Wii Guitar Hero III disc replacement program’…)

Cost of shooting down a spy satellite: $60m. Look on Alien’s face when the missile hits: priceless.
Posted Feb 16th 2008 9:31AM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: Misc. gadgets Sure, it seemed like the Pentagon had things wrapped up when they told us that they’d be aiming their rockets skyward and blasting that pesky zombie-spore and / or Alien-carrying satellite out of the sky. Of course, they failed to tell us the price: sixty million dollars. What seemed at first to be a simple game of Missile Command has become an extensive military operation, involving modified rockets and control systems, hundreds of industry experts and scientists, as well as the Aegis sea-defense cruiser accompanied by two destroyers. The Navy will wait until the space shuttle lands next Wednesday before beginning operations, and they say they’re fully prepared to bring W.O.P.R. AT&T Palm Centro in the wild

AT&T Palm Centro in the wild
The AT&T branded Centro has not officially been announced yet, but that is not stopping at least one AT&T retail store from selling the phone anyway. A lucky user over on the Treo Central Forums was able to make the purchase at a Denver retail store. What else is there to do after you purchase an unreleased and unannounced phone, unbox it and post the pictures. We can only assume that the official release will come Tuesday February 19, unless you are also lucky enough to get yours early. As you can also see from the above image, the Centro appears to be running the phone app from the Treo 680. Looking good. Microsoft announce availability of subscription based PC’s in Russia
Microsoft has partnered up with the Russian cellphone company Mobile TeleSystems OJSC to offer a subscription based PC. The subscription based PC’s will become available to all of the 85 million customers in Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Turkmenistan and Belarus beginning in June through Microsoft’s Unlimited Potential program. While the details on the PC’s are still light, they are reported to be running Windows Vista and will also include a built-in mobile broadband access. The two companies are also currently working on new mobile communication services that can be used on the PC’s, but have not made any mention as to what they will be. First impressions of the Cloudbook: rough around the edges
Posted Feb 16th 2008 10:39AM by Nilay PatelFiled under: LaptopsThe folks over at Laptop already hooked us up with some unboxing pics of Everex’s Cloudbook, and now they’ve posted up some quickie first impressions of the would-be Eee killer — and it looks like Everex could use that extra delay time to polish things up. The Cloudbook’s gOS build was found to be reasonably speedy and the minuscule trackpad designed for thumb usage actually grew on the reviewers, but what really killed the machine was a host of video glitches Everex says are the result of the wrong OS version being installed on the machine.
