Filed under: Misc. gadgets Rob Meek and Frank Miller’s not-so-humbly-named Meek FM “typographic synthesizer” has been making the rounds for a little while now, but in case you weren’t able to check out one of the few live “performances” of it, the pair have now thankfully let loose a video that shows just what the device is capable of. As you can see for yourself after the break, the one of a kind rig lets you take a distinctively Moog-like approach to designing fonts, with a slew of good old fashioned knobs provided to let you tweak things to your heart’s content. RFID Catflap prevents unauthorized exit

Written by admin on Friday, February 22nd, 2008 in Gadgets.

I’ve always thought of cats as rather evil creatures, since they don’t seem to treat their masters right and always have a mind of their own. Whenever they’re in heat though, they tend to go nuts and enter and leave your home as they please via the catflap. Put your foot down and prevent your pussy from being the village bicycle with the RFID Catflap. Since it uses RFID tags that allow access to the flap at specific, pre-programmed times, you don’t have to worry about having your kitty having a whole lot more happening sex life than yours.

Upstart Solazyme promises to make fuel from algae

Upstart Solazyme promises to make fuel from algae
Posted Feb 22nd 2008 1:06PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Misc. gadgets, Transportation It’s not the first to turn to algae and biomass as a source of fuel, but upstart Solazyme seems to think it’s got a leg up on other biofuel makers and its apparently lining up the deals and big bucks to prove it. As Technology Review reports, that includes Chevron, which is now in a “testing agreement” with the start-up, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which dished out a $2 million grant to the company. The trick that’s attracted all that interest, it seems, is the company’s particular way of using algae to convert biomass into fuel, which takes the apparently unorthodox approach of growing them in the dark, which causes them to produce more oil than they do in the light. GigaWorks T40 - Desktop speakers

GigaWorks T40 - Desktop speakers
There’s a new class of performance desktop speakers out there, and if you’re an audiophile (or audio-nut like me), you’ll want them for your own. The catchy-named GigaWorks T40 are tall, handsome speakers featuring a three-driver design for great sounding audio. Like the GigaWorks T20 before them, the T40s use a Midrange-Tweeter-Midrange (MTM) driver configuration that improves the overall audio balance with deeper and richer bass effects, giving you music that sounds fuller, warmer in tone and closer to the original recording, whether you’re listening to music or a movie. The T40s boast high quality components, such as the dual woven glass fiber cone driver, the cloth dome tweeters, BasXPort technology, convenient control and entertainment extension. GeForce 9 roadmap revealed, 9800 GX2 due March 11th?
Posted Feb 22nd 2008 10:40AM by Paul MillerFiled under: Desktops, Gaming The new budget-friendly 9600 GT (pictured) already has plenty of folks excited, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. NVIDIA’s new GeForce 9-series has a top-end 9800 GX2 card slated for March 11th — if these rumors are to be believed — that is supposed to best the 8800 Ultra’s performance by a solid 30 percent. The card is supposed to land for less than $599, but if that’s a bit much for you, the 9800 GTX should hit for under $399 in “late March,” with the 9800 GT following on April 3rd for under $299. If all of this is too much horsepower for you, the 9600 GS, 9500 GT and 9500 GS are slated to arrive in May, June and July, respectively, and all should hit at under the 9600 GT’s already friendly sub-$200 pricepoint. Wall-E GameCube mod melts our hearts, makes us want

Wall-E GameCube mod melts our hearts, makes us want
Posted Feb 22nd 2008 9:58AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Gaming Without question we’ve seen GameCube mods more extravagant than this, but until something even more adorable comes to light, we’re definitely giving the “Most Heartwarming” badge to this here creation. The Wall-E GameCube mod was inspired by the character in Disney’s upcoming film (titled Wall-E, of all things), and hours upon hours of TLC were clearly poured into this concoction. Dash Shipping Mar 27 to Pre-Order Customers

Written by admin on Friday, February 22nd, 2008 in Gadgets.

As we reported from CES, Dash was showing off a very cool GPS unit that uses collective data from its users to send pretty up to date traffic info back to those very users. Back then (and now), Dash was allowing folks to pre-order the units. So those units will ship on Mar 27. Kudos to Dash for keeping their Q1 promise.

Reaction Engines’ A2 supersonic jet could easily humble the Concorde
Posted Feb 22nd 2008 7:06AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Transportation Concorde, schmoncorde. At least that’s what we assume Reaction Engines’ A2 would utter if it could in fact speak. The supersonic jet, designed by Oxfordshire’s own Reaction Engines, could one day shuttle passengers from Europe to Down Under in less than five hours, cruising at up to 4,000 miles-per-hour along the way. Granted, the aircraft is still in concept mode at the moment, but if all goes to plan, it could be operational “within 25 years.” Reportedly, the 156-yard long jet could maintain a speed of 3,800 miles-per-hour — over twice that of the famed Concorde — and could carry 300 guests on each trip. Palm giving away free Zire Z22 PDA’s

Palm giving away free Zire Z22 PDA’s
Palm is currently offering a free Zire Z22 PDA to anyone who purchases a Palm TX. I am not sure why someone would need two PDA’s instead of just one, but maybe you could use the second as a gift or a backup in case you break of lost the first one. The Palm TX retails for $299 and the free Zire Z22 normally retails for $99. This offer is however only for a limited time and expires at the end of February. Maybe Palm just realized that standalone PDA sales are way down and figure its best to give these away instead of tossing them in the trash.
