Time Capsule: everything you wanted to know
Posted Mar 3rd 2008 11:00AM by Nilay PatelFiled under: Features, Wireless, Storage So we spent the weekend playing with Time Capsule and we’ve discovered some interesting answers to all your questions, as well as a few accompanying annoyances. Our main takeaway? It’s a solid product, but you shouldn’t expect it to do anything more than back up your files — and Apple really needs to step up and enable general NAS support for Time Machine. Read on! Obviously the Time Capsule hardware itself isn’t all that interesting — after all, it’s basically just an Airport Extreme with a hard drive inside. It’s quiet, but definitely not silent. It does have a fan that vents out the bottom, but overall it gets and stays pretty warm — almost hot, even. (Read the full post about ‘Time Capsule: everything you wanted to know’…)

Sony bids adieu to Trinitron CRT sets
Posted Mar 3rd 2008 2:04PM by Darren MurphFiled under: Displays, HDTV, Home Entertainment Just months after Sony hauled its RPTV production business off to the graveyard, the firm is now bidding a fond farewell to the Trinitron CRT. Believe it or not, the first Trinitron became a reality in 1968, and here we are some 40 years later shedding a tear as LCDs and OLED displays steal the thunder. Reportedly, the firm has moved some 280 million units worldwide between televisions and computer monitors, but we suppose all good things must eventually come to an end. So long, Trinitron — it’s been a mighty impressive run. (Read the full post about ‘Sony bids adieu to Trinitron CRT sets’…)

LG.Philips hooking Syntax-Brillian up with LCD panels

LG.Philips hooking Syntax-Brillian up with LCD panels
Posted Mar 3rd 2008 11:41AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Displays, HDTV Not even two months after Syntax-Brillian announced that it would be acquiring at least 700,000 LCD panels from Sharp during 2008, along comes word that the firm will also be on the receiving end of a similar deal with LG.Philips — er, LG Display, we should say. Nomenclature aside, the agreement between the two asserts that LG.Philips (or whatever it becomes) will supply Syntax-Brillian “with a minimum of 750,000 lcd panels during 2008,” though it’s certainly not the first deal of its kind. More specifically, it’ll provide 32-, 37-, 42- and 47-inch Full HD units, and the option to purchase additional inventory remains alive. Rumor: Asus set to announce the 9-inch Eee, dubbed the Eee PC 900
This one is still unconfirmed, but it looks like its ready to happen, and should make anyone holding out for an Eee PC with a larger display and more storage very happy. The Eee PC 900 is expected to feature a 9-inch (well actually an 8.9-inch) display, come standard with 1GB of RAM, and a 12GB solid-state-drive (SSD). It is expected to be a bit higher priced than the $399 that we have seen for the current Eee PC 701, but those higher specs should make it worth the extra cost, which is rumored to be around $600. A few extra nice points is that the overall size of the ultra-portable is expected to be just about the same as the current Eee PC 701 and most likely have a slightly faster processor. 8GB Multimedia Player Watch
With the advent of tiny and extremely portable digital media players, not to mention the influx of mobile phones which can serve your audio and video needs, the moment you see this device, you’d have to ask… …why another one? Does watching clip on your wristwatch really that much cooler than watching on a more conventional portable media player? Still, you have to admit, there are people who’d dig this device. After all, it does come with a substantial 8GB flash memory space in its compact form — not bad. It currently sells for around 43 in Chinavasion. Eyes-on with ASUS ZX1 Lamborghini phone
Posted Mar 3rd 2008 5:16AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: cellphones, Portable Audio, Portable Video While poking around the ASUS booth this morning we had a chance to witness the world premier unveiling of the ZX1 Lamborghini. We even took a few shots before it went under the glass. However, the real treat is the UI based on a Windows Mobile 6.1 core running special ASUS tweaks. It’s “just like the iphone” according to our friendly ASUS guide. The device is expected to fetch an unsubsidized €1,000 ($1,500) price tag when this 3G world-phone launches in Europe this May. Maybe you’ll think it’s worth it when we get back to you in a few with a video of the GUI albeit sans all that Lamborghini theme nonsense.Gallery: Eyes-on w (Read the full post about ‘Eyes-on with ASUS ZX1 Lamborghini phone’…)

A Chance to Try the BlackBerry 8830

A Chance to Try the BlackBerry 8830

As a cell-phone user who was eager for a smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard, I was eager to finally try out the BlackBerry 8830. The BlackBerry 8830 World Edition is definitely designed for business people on the go. In fact, it claims to be “the first CDMA smartphone capable of roaming globally on GSM/GPRS networks”. This means you can pretty much travel the world without having to change your phone, your phone number, or your e-mail. I had to admit that using a blackberry takes a little getting used to. The 8830 has this tiny track-ball mouse for interface that is reminiscent of Atari’s Centipede video game. (Read the full post about ‘A Chance to Try the BlackBerry 8830′…)

Quantum Reach broom

Ask any homemaker what their biggest gripe about brooms are and they will tell you that it is the head that is not perfectly shaped and angled to clean just about any nook and cranny in the home. Enter the Quantum Reach - this unique broom is capable of doing what an ordinary broom can’t and more. The secret of Quantum Reach is the articulating head and multiple surfaces. The head adjusts to any angle, allowing cleaning of any area: under beds or furniture, above art or overhangs, ceiling fans, HVAC vents, behind appliances, and even windows. Quantum Reach has bristles on one side of the head for sweeping and unique “T” hooks on the other side to attach Mircrofiber pads for sweeping, mopping and dusting. Hands-on with ASUS touchscreen M536 QWERTY
Posted Mar 3rd 2008 7:14AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Announcements, cellphones, CES Here you go QWERTY fans, ASUS’ M536. This touch-screen follow-up to the M530W runs Windows Mobile 6.1 under that 2.43-inch, 320 x 320 display. Inside you’ll find 802.11b/g WiFi, 256MB of flash, and GPS. While it sports 3.6Mbps HSDPA on the 2100/1900/850 bands, it’s unfortunately limited to GSM/EDGE/GPRS riding the 900/1800/1900 frequencies. As such, we’ll bet this one is heading straight to Europe, Statesiders. Our hands-on was brief due to that fingerprint scanner.
