Nokia’s N96 headed for an August release in UK

It looks like we don’t have to wait long before Nokia’s next flagship phone hits the shelves, at least in the UK that is. According to Carphone Warehouse, the Nokia N96 is scheduled to be released in August, barely six months after we first got the whiff of such a device and five months after the dual slider was officially announced at the MWC 2008. On the list accompanying the N96 are also the Sony Ericsson G900 and the Samsung G810 with release dates of April and July 2008 respectively.
Announced as a follow up to the successful N95, the Nokia N96 has features that could put the iphone to shame. This quad-band GSM and dual-band HSDPA phone runs on Symbian S60v3 FP2 and has a 2.8-inch QVGA display with 16 million colors. With 16GB of onboard memory and room for expansion via MicroSD up to 24GB, there is plenty of space to snap as many pictures as you like with its 5-megapixel camera and 30fps videos at VGA quality.
When the N95 was released, one of the major qualities lacking from the top-end device was a digital TV tuner. Nokia seems to have rectified this shortcoming by including a DVB-H tuner in the N96, inching that much closer to their oft-used “multimedia computer” tag. Nokia has also included a convenient kickstand to provide a much comfortable viewing angle while watching movies or digital TV. Connectivity is taken care of by the usual bevy of options such as Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, WiFi, and mini-USB. There are also several improvements over N95’s GPS with the N96 sporting aGPS accompanied by Nokia Maps 2.0 and geotagging. Dedicated gaming keys now find their place alongside the music keys, a welcome addition keeping the N-GAGE gaming platform in mind.
While all these features are just great, there is one intriguing problem with the N96, its battery. We don’t see the point of including a 950 mAh battery instead of at least 1200 mAh, like the N95 8GB, which maims this otherwise superb piece of technology. But on the whole, with an estimated price tag of $800, this is one phone with value for every penny spent.
