TiVo gets official with Desktop Plus 2.6, enables web video viewing
Posted Mar 18th 2008 8:00AM by Darren MurphFiled under: HDTV, Home Entertainment Well, what do you know? TiVo’s delivering as promised with this one, as Desktop Plus 2.6 is indeed going live in March — just like we were told back in January (and nary a week after TiVo promised YouTube access later this year). Truth be told, there’s not a whole lot here that you didn’t already get a taste of in our hands-on at CES, but here’s the skinny. Dextre is one “killer” robot

I’m surprised that no one on this site has covered this yet. After all, NASA’s repair robot Dextre has got to be one of the coolest gadgets ever made. The Dextre robot is designed to repair the International Space Station with a lot less risks to the astronauts. Instead of an astronaut going out in space in a suit and oxygen, they just send out the robot. Kind of like R2D2 during his introduction in The Phantom Menace. You can’t really tell how big it looks from the picture, but Dextre is actually about twelve feet long with eleven foot arms. Even with all of its…bigness, Dextre can still manipulate objects smaller than half a fraction of an inch. Astronaut Richard M. (Read the full post about ‘Dextre is one “killer” robot’…)

Apple updates AirPort Express Base Station

Apple has breathed new life into its AirPort Express Base Station, where it looks exactly the same like the original despite cramming in an all important upgrade - support for 802.11n networking compared to the slower 802.11g standard found in the original. In addition to that modification, a few minor tweaks have been introduced as well. First of all, let us see what has remained the same - the 10/100Base-T Ethernet port, a USB port that comes in handy for hooking up a remote printer, and an audio-output jack that supports both digital and analog audio. A power outlet from a wall is used to keep the AirPort Express going. Let us check out the benefits after the jump. (Read the full post about ‘Apple updates AirPort Express Base Station’…)

Is Cupertino looking to make the iPhone Clam up?

Is Cupertino looking to make the iPhone Clam up?

According to patent applicaitons with Uncle Sam, Apple may be toying with a clamshell iphone design that marries the multi touch screen interface with flip phone carrying convenience. The patent is for what is described as a “dual sided trackpad,” which is kinda a hand held dual screen Nintendo DS for adults. But that’s not all. The patent is for a multi touch interface that would be useable from BOTH ssides of the screen, making it active whether the clamshell iPhone is in the open or closed position. This also gives the user a three screen functionality and interaction which makes for some rather interesting design possibilities (see the mockup below). Runt may be small, but still packs a wallop

Runt may be small, but still packs a wallop

I don’t live in a very large city, so I’m not worried about getting mugged on the street for my ipod or anything. That’s just not something you hear about where I come from. Big cities, however, tend to be a different story, which causes some people to carry stun guns for protection. If you’re looking for something small to carry around, you might be interested in The Runt. While it is as small as the name implies, this little stun gun packs quite a punch. It’s roughly the size of a pager (do people still use those?) and has either 350k, 650k or 950k volts. What’s nice is that these little guys won’t break the bank. You’ll pay $40, $50 or $60 respectively. (Read the full post about ‘Runt may be small, but still packs a wallop’…)

Kiddo Kidkeeper System

Kiddo Kidkeeper System

Kidnappings are pretty common these days, so parents tend to over-worry when it comes to their kids’ whereabouts, which indirectly translates to a more strained relationship as the children themselves feel under pressure and “cornered”, whenever the adults start repeating all the same questions over and over again. Smart Target aims to relieve the pressure cooker environment on both parties with its wireless proximity alarm system that helps boost child safety, assisting parents in locating wayward younglings quickly, while keeping them within a pre-set “virtual fence”. The Intel Netbook; Rumored pics of Intel’s new UMPC
The latest notebook that is rumored to be to hitting the ultra-mobile, or Eee PC competitor market looks like it could be the Intel Netbook. A few pictures have turned up of the new device courtesy of a “buddy that works for a US Based OEM.” The Netbook is said to feature a 9-inch display, 900MHz Celeron processor, 512MB RAM, 40GB hard drive, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and will be running Windows XP. The Netbook also weighs less than three-pounds and has a carrying handle built-in. Rumor has it that the Netbook will be landing in the US around June and be in the ballpark of $400. Of course with all leaked pics, we are left to wonder just how accurate or real they are, based on these blurry, but somewhat nice camera-phone style pics the Netbook does have a nice appearance.
