Filed under: cellphones Motorola’s Linux-based A1600 MING 2 may still not have seen a release ’round these parts, but that apparently hasn’t stopped the company from churning out a new model in the form of the A1800, which has now wound up in the hands of The Boy Genius Report. According to BGR, this one shrinks things down even further while still staying “sturdy as a rock” and, somewhat interestingly, includes two SIM card slots. Apart from that, you can expect the CDMA / quad-band GSM handset to pack a 3-megapixel camera and built-in Bluetooth, but any other details seem to be a bit hard to come by at the moment. Apparently a couple of meddlesome 20-somethings working at a Salem, New Hampshire Apple store managed to scoot away with somewhere between 330 and 700 iPhones. Cool Clock recycles old computer gear

Written by admin on Thursday, March 27th, 2008 in Gadgets.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably acquired a massive amount of old gadgets and computer parts. There are times where I have to just close my eyes and start throwing stuff out because I need the closet space. For some reason I always think that I’ll get around to finding a use for that old Pentium II or 8x CD burner. While I probably won’t actually use them, someone has figured out a good use for old optical drives. Just turn them into clocks.

Just from looking at this I would guess that they’ve simply removed the casing of an old CD drive, popped a CD in the microwave for a bit and then used a DIY clock kit. While it was likely a simple process, the end result does look pretty cool.

Filed under: cellphonesWhile we first got wind of a EDGE Evolution rollout from Ericsson, Nokia Siemens isn’t about to let one of those young upstart carrier equipment manufacturers steal its top-of-the-heap EDGE thunder, and has just announced the “launch” of its Dual Carrier EDGE software solution, marking the first steps of rolling out EDGE Evolution to the company’s radio portfolio. The software upgrade doubles current EDGE speeds to 592kbps, and will be available from Q3 2008 onwards. Nokia Siemens won’t stop there, though, EDGE is going to get another bump not too long after that to EGPRS 2, with download speeds of 1.2Mbps and uplink speeds up to 473kpbs. Myfotowall is the Ultimate in Personalization

The photo you’re seeing here isn’t a bed on a beach with a portable wall. What you’re seeing is someone’s favorite memory blown up into wallpaper. Personally, I think it is about time someone offered a service that can convert an average digital photo into wallpaper. The company, Myfotowall can print a digital photo up to a maximum of 1600%, or sixteen times larger. The quality is only as good as the quality of the original photograph, but that is no surprise. The wallpaper produced by Myfotowall is UV cured, which means they are “lightfast for up to three years”. In other words, it will be three years before the photo will start fading. PWN 2 OWN contest lets hackers choose Vista, OS X or Linux
Posted Mar 27th 2008 9:40AM by Darren MurphFiled under: LaptopsLast year’s PWN 2 OWN contest at the CanSecWest security conference went over way better than expected (read: exploits were glorified), so this year, organizers have spiced things up by letting hackers have their way with three separate machines. The Linux, OS X and Vista-based rigs were all setup as similarly as possible in order to “make sure the attack surface was the same on all of them.” For attendees in Vancouver, there sits a $20,000 top prize — which dwindles with each passing day as restrictions on attacks ease up — but it can only be acquired if an all new zero-day cyber roundhouse kick is used. Anyone here going to give it a go? (Read the full post about ‘PWN 2 OWN contest lets hackers choose Vista, OS X or Linux’…)

AMD’s fastest Phenom X4 9850 desktop CPU tested, Intel points and giggles like brat
Posted Mar 27th 2008 5:45AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Desktops, Gaming Today’s benchmark day for AMD’s fastest desktop processor — the Phenom X4 9850. Free of the nasty TLB (Translation Lookaside Buffer) bug, the stage is now set for a head-to-head with Intel’s best. While it’s a significant step forward for AMD, the 9850 proc hardly compares with Intel’s best quad-core desktop CPUs. Nevertheless, as PCPer says, “any enthusiast or gamer looking for a ~$240 processor is going to have a fantastic experience with the 9850.” We’re just happy to see AMD back on track and ready to compete. Now get to it AMD, faster clock speeds and 45-nm processes please? (Read the full post about ‘AMD’s fastest Phenom X4 9850 desktop CPU tested, Intel points and giggles like brat’…)

Study finds teens don’t really care about their hearing
Posted Mar 27th 2008 8:42AM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: Portable Audio Those darn kids — they just don’t listen! And soon, according to a report, they won’t physically be able to listen. It seems that modern teens, with their cloaking jackets, space telephones, and telepathic headsets fail to obey the simplest tenet of leisure-time music enjoyment: keeping their ipod and Zune volumes at a semi-natural level. In focus-group discussions, researchers found that high school students in the Netherlands were aware of the potential hearing loss which can be caused by high volume listening, yet had no immediate plans to crank their jams at anything but 11.
