Alltop - the (gadget) blog aggregator

Written by admin on Saturday, April 5th, 2008 in Gadgets.

If after reading CG you still find yourself craving for even more gadget news check out gadgets.alltop.com, an aggregation of all the top gadget blogs.

Along with gadgets Alltop has sections for other popular blogging niches (Gaming, Politics, Photography etc.). Though why you’d want to stray away from gadgets and tech I don’t know.

This post maybe somewhat on the biased side, as Alltop is a project by Guy Kawasaki and I’m currently sat in a room listening to him.

Bulbdial Clock

Bulbdial Clock

I don’t know if you ever notice our “categories” for Coolest gadgets, but many of them are pretty descriptive. One of them is “Cool Clocks”, and when I saw the Bulbdial clock, I knew I just had to write about it under that category. As you can see, the Bulbidal is an electric clock that thinks it is a sundial. Instead of using the natural energy of the sun, it uses miniature streetlights that spin around the post. There is an hour hand, a minute hand, and a fast moving second hand. All these combine to give you a time that is a lot more accurate than your everyday sundial. This design was created by a DIY creator/blogger David on Ironic Sans. (Read the full post about ‘Bulbdial Clock’…)

Trapster warns drivers of speed traps through mobile phones

Written by admin on Saturday, April 5th, 2008 in Gadgets.

Trapster is a new mobile phone application that may subliminally encourage drivers to speed. Why subliminal? Well Trapster comes under the guise of being a speed trap sharing system, which means they, or actually the other users are helping you in not getting caught while driving fast. Using Wi-Fi or GPS, Trapster lets drivers report the location of speed traps, red light cameras and other locations that may be of interest to other drivers. Once you get into the Trapster system, you’ll automatically get an audio alert when you’re approaching a location with existing ticket threat. Then it’s up to you how you can avoid that threat.

Your city’s coverage stinks; Neilson’s list shows why

Written by admin on Saturday, April 5th, 2008 in Gadgets.

This funky map shows the best 3G and voice network around the country according to Neilson survey.  Where does your major metro area rank?  You’d think the big cities would at least be in the top five right?  Nope.

Indeed, it seems the bulk of city dwellers in the nations largest cities suffer with subpar speed and access.  Florida is looking pretty good for phone service while good data is spread out.  Anyone planning on using this data to plan your next move?

Cities with top ten voice networks averaged a 99.2% successful call rate; on average, 0.3% of all calls in these cities were dropped.

Plasma screens coming to your cellphone very soon

Plasma screens coming to your cellphone very soon
AT&T’s new mobile TV service won’t just get new phones on the next update to its handset lineup, but possibly new Panasonic cellphones with low-voltage plasma technology under the hood as well. Details about this move were revealed by the consumer electronics product maker in a recent press conference, where it announced a few revamps to their telecom and HDTV divisions. Mark Balsama, a Group Manager of the Communications Systems Division, says that these new cellphone plasma displays will “rival OLED displays for brightness, contrast and thinness, and can be manufactured for much less money.” For much less money, eh? But how come they can’t even do it with their Plasma TVs in the first place? (Read the full post about ‘Plasma screens coming to your cellphone very soon’…)

Screen grabs: Matt Saracen has iPhone trouble, is still really cute
Posted Apr 3rd 2008 11:07PM by Paul MillerFiled under: cellphonesScreen grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com. Poor Matt, this guy has it so hard. If he isn’t having relational trouble with Julie Taylor, he’s disappointing his dad, his coach (Julie’s dad, conveniently enough), his team, or the entire town of Dillon, Texas. Last thing the guy needs is an iphone telling him he’s wrong, so we’re going to pin this Friday Night Lights upside-down incident on Zach Gilford, the man behind the cute-shy quarterback legend that is Matt Saracen. You disappoint us, Zach. (Read the full post about ‘Screen grabs: Matt Saracen has iPhone trouble, is still really cute’…)

To say it’s been awhile since we’ve seen anything noteworthy from AOC would be a gross understatement, but the Chinese firm is hitting back with a sleek new PMP that just dares you to feed it off-the-wall formats. Besides boasting an expansive 3-inch 400 x 240 resolution display, this bugger handles RM, RMVB, FLV, AVI, MOV, ASF, MP4, WMV, MPG, WMA, MP3, APE and FLAC files (among others) and offers up an FM tuner, text / photo viewer, 4GB of storage space and TV-out functionality. Fairly potent for 599 yuan ($85), huh?

Dell to cut even more jobs as it reduces costs

Filed under: Misc. gadgetsLooks like Dell’s plan to trim $3B in costs from its budget is going to involve even more job cuts than the 8,800 already announced — speaking to analysts today, Michael Dell said that his company’s management had “identified a very significant opportunity” to cut costs, and that it was “aggressively going after it.” That means even more jobs will be slashed, apparently — a further 1,000 this quarter at least, but Dell wouldn’t say what the total would be in the end, just that it would be more than 8,800. Motorola to cut another 2,600 jobs

Motorola to cut another 2,600 jobs
Posted Apr 3rd 2008 8:02PM by Nilay PatelFiled under: Misc. gadgetsThe tough times just don’t seem to end at Motorola — the company announced today that it’s laying off another 2,600 workers, for a total of 10,000 positions eliminated since the start of 2007. That’s on top of the various high-level executive departures that have been taken place lately, not to mention the company’s plan to split off its mobile phone business, which will undoubtedly lead to more cuts down the line. The goal is to reduce costs by some $500M by the end of the year, and some of the jobs being lost come as Moto closes a factory in Singapore and a WiMAX development lab in Florida.
