Get unlimited international calls with Skype’s new plan
With half my family living halfway around the world, I quickly embraced Skype, the program (or if you want to get technical, Voice Over Internet Protocol) that allows you to talk to other Skype users over your computer, for free. In fact, I’m always amazed that more of my friends and family haven’t signed up… it’s almost like they don’t want to chat to me for hours or something. Anyway, despite Skype calls being free to other Skype users, if you wanted to use your account to call landlines or mobile phones in the past, you would still have to pay - and the cost would depend on the length of the call and where you were calling. But no more! Skype’s new calling plan aims to encourage more people to pick up the service, and it (Read the full post about ‘Get unlimited international calls with Skype’s new plan’…)

Vamoose! away cigarette odor

Vamoose! away cigarette odor
I am happy to report that I didn’t personally test this product, a tobacco odor elimination product, because no one I know smokes. And that’s a good thing. But Vamoose tells me: “Independent lab testing of the Vamoose 1808T Tobacco Fabric Spray demonstrated that when compared to other leading fabric sprays claiming ‘tobacco odor elimination,’ Vamoose was the only product that demonstrated no residual tobacco odors present in the fabric even several weeks after the application.” So there. The power behind the permanent removal of tobacco odors is Novexium which “molecularly combines with the tar and nicotine molecules deposited by smoking and converts them into inert matter.” So you know it’s working, a scent is created (unless you get the fragrance free option) - Fresh Scent, New Car Scent, and Leather Scent. Room for one more? Panasonic wiggles into OLED TV game

Room for one more? Panasonic wiggles into OLED TV game
by Darren Murph, posted Apr 24th 2008 at 5:54PMAlright, we get it. SED actually is not the wave of the future for televisions, but OLED most probably is. At present, we’ve got Sony, Toshiba, Samsung and LG Display (among others) all vying for your future dollars, and since competition in the HDTV space is so grand for consumers, we won’t be kvetching too much about yet another entrant. DigiTimes has it that Matsushita (parent company of Panasonic) is looking to begin production of OLED displays “in the future.” That’s it. No juicy clues as to when, no inside information about panel sizes — nothing. Just enough to tease you and leave you in a state of panic for the foreseeable future. DISH Networks teams with Alcatel-Lucent for DVB-SH trial in US
by Darren Murph, posted Apr 24th 2008 at 4:49PMAh ha! So this is what DISH Network was planning on doing with its recently-purchased swath of spectrum. Just under two months after analysts pondered what the firm was thinking throwing out bids for a smidgen of bandwidth — and not even a fortnight after the ICO G1 successfully launched in order to bring DVB-SH to America — out comes the whole truth. The satcaster is teaming up with Alcatel-Lucent to test the Digital Video Broadcasting - Satellite services to Handhelds technology right here in the US, with A-L providing the equipment, test tools and training. The evaluation will be taking place at a DISH facility in Atlanta from May until Augus (Read the full post about ‘DISH Networks teams with Alcatel-Lucent for DVB-SH trial in US’…)

MIT researcher aims to understand language with Human Speechome Project
by Donald Melanson, posted Apr 24th 2008 at 2:46PM It’s far from the first time a researcher has enlisted the help of his own family or kids, but MIT’s Deb Roy’s latest endeavor looks to be a bit more ambitious than most, as he’s aiming to do nothing short of understand how children learn language. To do that, Roy and his wife installed 11 video cameras and 14 microphones throughout their house to record just about every moment of their son’s first three years. That, obviously, also required a good deal of computing power, which came in the form of a temperature-controlled data-storage room consisting of five Apple Xserves and a 4.4TB Xserve RAID (you can guess why Apple’s profiling ‘em), along with an array of backup tape drives and robotic tape changes (and an amply supply of other Macs, of course). LG’s Secret is a 5MP camera phone that captures DivX video at 120 fps
LG has officially announced its Secret—a new 5-megapixel camera phone that is able to capture video in DivX quality at 120 fps. Set for a European release sometime in 2008, the LG’s Secret, aka KF-750, actually belongs to LG’s Black Label series. The Secret boasts of being the slimmest 5-megapixel camera phone at just 11.8mm (0.46-inches) thick. But don’t let its thickness persuade you into believing that the LG Secret will offer you features as thin as its body. On the contrary, the LG Secret wallops some heavies aside from its camera. Other features include a carbon fiber casing, tempered glass LCD and neon touch features. (Read the full post about ‘LG’s Secret is a 5MP camera phone that captures DivX video at 120 fps’…)

Sprint to add support for MMS functionality in their WinMo devices

Written by admin on Friday, April 25th, 2008 in Gadgets.

Sprint’s current lack of support for MMS or PictureMail in their network might be ending soon, as Chief Marketing Officer John Garcia reveals plans that they are working on something with Microsoft for Windows Mobile devices. In a response to a customer’s query, John said:

“We’re working with Microsoft to build a PictureMail application that will work on their Windows product to give you a similar experience as our other products. As some of you may be aware, currently, you can actually do this on a Windows product, but you have to do it through e-mail or Bluetooth. We realize this is cumbersome.
