Transistors the size of 10 atoms

Written by admin on Sunday, May 18th, 2008 in Gadgets.

10 Atoms! Think about it. Nano sized.

Scientists at the University of Manchester have made this amazing breakthrough using graphene, a material that is essentially a single layer of carbon atoms. Although transistor size has been decreasing on a regular basis ever since their invention, in recent times, that speed has slowed down due to the breakdown in electrical properties at the nanoscale level.

We may not see graphene-based chips for another 15 or 20 years, but it is one possibility to replace silicon as it reaches its limits.

LED Clip-on Headlight for camping . . . or the movies

LED Clip-on Headlight for camping . . . or the movies
So, this very nice publicist, Katie, asked me to take her new headlight gizmo “out camping or hiking.” Since I try not to do either of those activities, I promised to show it a good time and take it to the movies. The Coghlan’s LED headlight had a great time but might have annoyed some of the partrons with the incessant beam (shines continuously for 25 hours), and brightness (3.5 Lumens of output power). We could have used the night vision filter (flips over light) to hopscotch through the dark theatre without spilling a kernel of popcorn. Best of all, I didn’t look like a miner since it easily clips on a visor, and weighs almost nothing. (Read the full post about ‘LED Clip-on Headlight for camping . . . or the movies’…)

Laptop backpacks for motherly computer owners

Laptop backpacks for motherly computer owners
Okay, so even though I freely admit to naming my electronics, pampering them with accessories, showing them off to family and friends, swaddling them in cases, I’m not crazy. Not certifiably so, anyway. That’s why even I know that the $80 laptop backpack from Built takes the “gadget-as-baby” phenomenon to new heights. Designed for 12″ to 17″ notebook computers, the water-resistant neoprene backpack features three compartments (one for accessories, a shoulder pocket for whatever would fit there, and one for the laptop itself) and can be machine-washed and left on the line to drip dry. That’s more than I can say about those handwash-only real babies. Via Crave. (Read the full post about ‘Laptop backpacks for motherly computer owners’…)

Keep your fruit fresh with BLUE

Keep your fruit fresh with BLUE
I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t eat all of the healthy foods that I should. I love my junk food and Mountain Dew, but I do try to eat a few things that aren’t terrible for my body. Fruit is something that I like, especially bananas. The only problem is that I don’t eat them often enough, and many times they go bad. Here’s an awesome gadget that’s supposed to keep your fruit around longer. I don’t know much about how a light can kill bacteria, but this bowl named BLUE claims to use such a light to keep your fruit fit to eat. All you need to do is pile your fruit in this sleek looking bowl, turn on the soft blue light and go about your business. (Read the full post about ‘Keep your fruit fresh with BLUE’…)

Digital Escape Mask Puts You In A Virtual Fantasy World
Everyday we see things we’d rather not see. Reality is harsh sometimes, dude. We’re faced with the harsh facts of everyday life, well, everyday. Turning a blind eye isn’t exactly impossible, but some people have a harder time turning a blind eye than others. If there was a way to see things how you would prefer to see them, would you take that opportunity? The Digital Escape is a mask which draws a shroud between you and the realities you face, projecting serene images in the place of the harsh truth. The Digital Escape mask makes the user look like a robotic being, but it’s the story behind the lens that makes this wearable a unique object. Bean Vac makes your fancy coffee last longer

Bean Vac makes your fancy coffee last longer
Some days I feel like I’m the only person in the world that doesn’t drink coffee. It seems to me that most coffee drinkers can be put into three categories. First, you have the people that drink it black; regular or decaf are really the only choices for them. To spice it up, add a little cream or sugar. Then you’ve got the Starbucks people. Those that don’t understand their strange lingo barely even know that they’re ordering coffee. Heck, I’m not even sure some of them even know what they’re ordering. Finally you have the people that must have the finest grounds from the most exotic places in the world. These people turn their noses up at anything but the finest. 32 Foot Water Blaster
Summer will soon rear its head, and boy am I looking forward to a more sunny disposition. The 32 Foot Water Blaster will be perfect for any poolside activities if you happen to hold a party then. This water bazooka uses air-powered pump action to safely fire 32′ streams of water, allowing you to drench your target from long-distance. The gun has two nozzles that rotate as the gun is pumped, firing a wide spray to soak multiple combatants simultaneously. The stock rests comfortably on your shoulder, preventing excessive kick, and the smooth pump-handle allows rapid fire. The barrel holds up to 1 3/4 quarts of water and is easily filled under a faucet or spigot. Made of ABS plastic. (Read the full post about ‘32 Foot Water Blaster’…)

MyDVR? WD adds Dish DVR Storage Support to External Drive
Western Digital has just unleashed their My DVR Expander external hard drive.  This WD drive is certified to work as an external storage device for Dish Network DVRs. The hard drive line sports 500GB of storage, which in TV terms, is 300 hours of standard definition content and 60 hours of high definition content.  The drive will definitely work with the Dish set top boxes.  However, on top of the device’s $149.99 price, you will have to pay a fee to activate the USB port on your set top box. Western Digital is hoping to expand the compatibility of such external drivers to other TV providers. Via [CrunchGear] Keep up with the latest gadget goodness! (Read the full post about ‘MyDVR? HTC plans to sell 2 million Diamonds this year

HTC plans to sell 2 million Diamonds this year
Well, HTC has already sold two million Touch handsets and it seems they believe they can do just the same with the newly announced Touch Diamond. Except with the Diamond they expect to hit that two million mark within the year and with the handset being released first in June that gives them just about six months to achieve their goal. Sounds a little lofty, but DigiTimes is reporting that Taiwanese mobile carrier CHT has already ordered about 20,000 to 30,000 units, that number combined with the other large carriers across the world it almost seems doable.
