I just got a notice from my cable provider, Charter Communications, that they may start to “deliver or facilitate delivery of advertisements about goods and services that may be of interest” to me.  Apparently, they’re not too concerned about their customers’ rights, and are doing this as an opt-out service.  It’s one thing to spy for national security reasons, it’s another thing to spy on innocent people just to deliver ads.

From their website:

Targeted Marketing

Charter may partner with a third-party advertising company who may utilize cookies or web beacons to deliver or facilitate delivery of advertisements about goods and services that may be of interest to You.

Alltel offers up firmware update for the Palm Treo 755p

Written by admin on Friday, June 13th, 2008 in Gadgets.

Palm has released a new, albeit small firmware update for Alltel Treo 755p users. The new update brings the firmware from version 1.02 to 1.03, which will be reflected as software version “Treo755p-1.03-CDMA” on your phone’s info screen. The update does not offer anything overly exciting, but is still recommended as it does correct a “reset issue that occurs under certain specific and rare conditions.” As always when updating your device, please take some proper precautions and make sure you are backed up first, and of course follow the directions offered from Palm closely.

HP iPAQ 900 to debut on June 30

Written by admin on Friday, June 13th, 2008 in Gadgets.

HP has just announced that its latest smartphone, the iPAQ 900 Series Business Manager which has recently got the FCC’s kiss of approval, will start shipping on June 30. Touted as a blackberry killer, the iPAQ 900 is a 3G smartphone flashing a stylish, glossy piano-black design. Being a smartphone, the iPAQ 900’s features and functionality suits well with the mobile connectivity and computing needs of business professionals. But of course non-business professionals especially those into smartphones would still find this smartphone a very useful toy.

The iPAQ 900 boasts a full QWERTY keyboard, tri-band UMTS/HSDPA and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 3-megapixel camera.

Robo-Pong

Written by admin on Friday, June 13th, 2008 in Gadgets.

We have reported about some advancements in Pong before, so I figured we should also report about advancements in ping-pong. Okay, that was a weak introduction, but I believe that Robo-Pong 2040 is the best thing to happen to ping-pong since the paddle.

Robo-Pong could easily play the main villain in a Balls of Fury sequel in the ultimate battle of man vs. machine. Robo-Pong wields a gun that fires ping pong balls at its human opponent at varying speeds, and can even do fast chops and shallow spikes. With a top serving speed of 75 miles per hour, Robo-Pong would give Forrest Gump a run for his money.

HP monitor does a stunning 1 billion colors

Written by admin on Friday, June 13th, 2008 in Gadgets.

Granted, cell phone displays these days on the high end segment are able to display a whopping 16.7 million colors, and that specification doesn’t really matter since the display is so small to begin with. What about your monitor? Surely it can do more than that, but HP’s latest offering will definitely put whatever number your monitor can muster to shame. The new HP DreamColor Display (we mentioned it briefly earlier this week) is a new LCD screen which is able to offer a whopping 1 billion colors at the very minimum in a 30-bit, LED-backlit display.

eStarling Digital Photo Frame, now with Facebook

Written by admin on Friday, June 13th, 2008 in Gadgets.

It has been a while since we have written about the eStarling Digital Photo Frame, but they have made some recent advancements that are worth talking about all over again.

The latest 8-inch digital photo frame from eStarling’s is Wi-fi capable, but that really isn’t anything new. What is new is that the frame is made for Facebook support. All a user has to do is provide his or her username and password, and when his or her friends upload their pictures, they will be automatically downloaded directly into the frame with a resolution of 800×600 pixels.

Mixko Whippy Light makes me hungry

Written by admin on Friday, June 13th, 2008 in Gadgets.

I usually dislike how fluorescent lights look in lighting fixtures, however, this little pendant is one exception.  The witty little light makes the bulb look as if it is part of an ice  cream cone, which in the hot summer weather sounds really good.  Then again, having a light hanging around reminding you of something cold on a hot day when you’re all out of icecream just seems cruel and unusual.  You could torture your kids and hang this in their room.  Of course in turn you would get pestered constantly for icecream.

It appears that the pendant light was available at one time on Mixko, but is now only displayed as a piece of art.  However, it is possible that if you email they still might be able to hook you up with one.  When they were available they weren’t exactly cheap though, it looks like they were priced right around $75 for one light.  That’s not a set of pendants, no just the one all by its self.  The Mixko products are based in the UK so although they will work with the US, it costs a bit extra for those of us in the US.
